The 5 Pairs of Shoes Every Woman Needs

Comfortable and stylish, these are the best 5 pairs of shoes every woman should own.

5 Shoes Women Need Converse Dr. Marten Black Boots Sneakers

If you find yourself constantly wondering, “What shoes should I wear?” - welcome! I’m here to help you! There can be so many fashion problems when it comes to shoes. We want them to be comfortable, but also stylish, and we need them to be versatile, plus maybe not too expensive.

When I was backpacking Europe several years ago, I could only fit 2 or 3 pairs of shoes in my backpack, so I really had to think about what to bring. I ended up with a pair of Birkenstocks, and a pair of Converse; and those got me through almost every situation. I ended up buying a pair of black, block-heeled boots in Germany and those completed my trifecta. I could have lived off those 3 pairs of shoes forever.

I decided to add a pair of pumps, and a pair of hiking/weather proof boots to this list because if you’re not living out of a backpack, 5 pairs of shoes can get you through pretty much every situation life can throw your way. (I mean, we all want endless pairs of shoes but these are the real MVP’s.) I’m linking to a few different pairs in each category; my personal favorites, plus budget options as some of these shoes can get pretty pricey. Happy shopping!

1. Sneakers

Sneakers have always been a go-to staple, and now there are so many trendy styles to pick and choose from. My Converse sneakers went with me all over the world when I was traveling, and were comfortable even after miles and miles of walking and hiking. They need some breaking in, but after that you’re good to go and they will last for several years. I also love a classic pair of Adidas, but even though they are SUPER comfy, I’ve found they don’t last as long as Converse do.

2. Black Heeled Boots

You can wear a black heeled boot for just about any occasion. They’re nice enough for a dinner date or a girls night out, but also perfect for a festival, adding edge to a summer look, or just elevating your outfit. Wear them to jury duty, wear them to work, wear them to your friends birthday party, wear them on vacation, wear them literally anywhere.

Note: I’m very picky about the toe of my boots. For heel-ed boots without lacing that are slide on, or zip up, I NEED a pointed toe. An almond or pointed toe adds some edge, makes your look taller, and feels much more modern than a rounded toe.

3. Combat Boots, or Hiking Boots.

The right combat boots can also serve as hiking boots, and snow boots, but it’s a tricky line. If you live in an area where snow and rain are a thing, you’ll need a pair of shoes that can keep your feet dry and your body upright. I actually really like Doc Martens for this purpose, although they can be quite heavy and need a lot of breaking in. They’re also pricey, but they’re great quality and will last forever.

I have a pair of Jadon Doc Marten’s and I’ve worn them in both snow and rain. They keep my feet dry and are super thick soled and grippy in the snow and ice, not to mention they can be wore with a myriad of different outfits. I’ve worn them in all seasons, styled them with dresses or shorts in the warmer months, and with cropped jeans or joggers in cooler months.

A pair of hiking boots can also serve dual purposes if you’re a big hiker. When I lived in NYC I would often wear my weather proof hiking boots during the winter to work, and then change into sneakers once I got to the office. The choice between combat or hiking boots will all depend on your personal style.

4. Nude Pumps.

I cannot recommend this pair of pumps enough. I know women often struggle with finding a pair of comfortable heels, and these Marc Fisher Caitlin Pumps are truly so comfortable and will match with literally anything. They come in a ton of different colors and materials and are flattering on anyone.

Wear them to elevate any outfit. Perfect for work and weddings. I’ve work mine to almost every wedding we’ve been to and been able to dance all night long without taking them off. The block heel is the perfect middle height, the suede material is comfortable on heels and toes, and the footbed is lightly padded for extra comfort. I’ve had mine for at least 2 or 3 years and they’re still in good shape.

I’ve linked a cheaper pair that I found on Amazon as well, but I really would invest in the Caitlin Pump. The one’s I’ve linked are available at DSW, and if you wait for a sale and sign up for their rewards program you can definitely get a good deal.

5. Birkenstock Sandals

Oh, Birkenstock. You are my best friend in the summer. These sandals are another travel favorite. I brought them along for 5 months through the beaches of Greece, the rice fields of Bali, and the rocks of Croatia. They are the perfect sandal to slip on and go, and will literally mold to your feet. I’ve had mind for almost 5 years now, and they’re still going strong.

You can wear Birkenstock sandals anywhere and with any outfit outside of anything really formal. Match them with a summer dress, shorts and a tee, bathing suits on the beach, warm weather vacations, brunches, wineries, etc. They are comfortable to walk in for long distances and wear during summer activities like kayaking, casual bike riding, etc.

I recommend the Mayari style with the toe hold, as I find having a toe hold makes for a much more secure fit on your foot. Again, I’ve linked some perfect budget dupes from Target, but can’t speak to their quality.
